I am a registered veterinary technician, and I know that this diet isn't the most premium diet available. However, I have a household of 7 cats, and it has been very difficult finding a kibble that makes every one of them happy and healthy. My cat Junior was having consistently soft smelly stools since kittenhood and was diagnosed with coronavirus, which there is no cure for and he will have to live with the rest of his life. The vet suggested trying prescription and limited ingredient formulas to see if I could find a formula that would minimize his symptoms. After trying alot of very expensive premium brands, none of them would work and most of them actually made his symptoms worse. I think I tried every diet available. And to boot, some of the other kitties hated these fancy brands and wouldn't eat them, so I had other kitties losing a dangerous amount of weight all while my boy Junior's diarrhea never got better. I finally tried Science Diet Sensitive Stomach on a lark and what do you know - all the cats like it, and Junior's stools firmed up right away. Junior's stools are rarely smelly now, and all the cats are at a healthy weight and happy with these crunchies. There is also a much decreased incidience of vomiting overall with all of the cats.

I took in a foster cat almost one year ago and have tried almost everything to rid him of diarrhea. The vets were unable to diagnose any parasite or physical problems, and his behavior has always appeared happy and healthy. The vets said it could be a food allergy, so I began trying different foods. A couple of months ago, I bought SD Sensitive Stomach. I had been reluctant because of the ingredients - I strive to avoid foods with "meal" of any kind - as well as the price ($40 for 15.5 lbs). After a year, five other foods and several supplements, though, I was desperate. Sensitive Stomach did the trick. There was a noticeable difference within a few weeks, and the stools are completely normal now. His weight gain has been constant regardless of food, so I do not attribute that to the Science Diet brand.
The drawback is that my other two cats prefer this food to their original brand, so it's quite expensive for three cats. The other two have not gained weight with this product, and their appetite does not appear to have increased at all.

My cat was born in August 2001, so he's almost 10 years old. Three years ago he started to throw up quite frequently. The vet ran tons of VERY EXPENSIVE tests and for the most part ruled out anything that can be treated. We tried changing food but nothing worked. I tried giving him home cooked food as well and that made throwing up even worse. So one day I was in a pet store and the clerk said he had the same problem with his cat and suggested the MOST EXPENSIVE FOOD IN STORE. I was skeptical but I had nothing to lose (but money). Three years later my cat is doing fantastic. He only throw up when I feel bad for him and give him tuna as a pity treat. He's healthy, bouncy and seems to enjoy food. The big bag lasts us for ever. We bought a bag on November 5th and today again on March 19. That's 4+ months for $40 (which is how much the bag costs in pet store). I think I can afford $10/month for my buddy. I have no idea what's in there and I don't really care. All I care is that my cat looks happy and healthy. Food purists who believe in feeding cat organic chicken and brown rice might not care for it.

After bouts with Pancreatitis in both of my schnauzers (neither are overweight, but have major sensitivities to fat content), this is the only food I can feed them without worrying if it's right for them. It has no corn, which is fantastic--unlike other cheaper brands. It might be $10 more than you're used to spending on dog food, but it is worth it. They are your family and deserve to eat as well (or better--haha) than we do. I love my dogs more than anything which is why I will only feed them this. (They love it too!!)

Although I have tried other more expensive brands, I find I am continually forced back to this brand. My purebreed "babies" are prone to skin and digestive problems, and this healthy food is the only one that can really make a differrence. The quality is unsurpassable, the price is better than most. I highly recommend this dog food.

My dog has always been fed Wellness. They make a great product. I've always fed him the poultry blend and decided to give this recipe a try. He loves it.
I also turned my neighbor on to Wellness for small breeds about 6 months ago for her Yorkie. She has always been under weight at about 3 LBS. She is now up to a healthy 4 LBS and coat looks much better. The groomer even noticed her healthier appearance.
This is a fine product!

I bought my first one at least 10 years ago -- and I actually still have it. I also bought 3 more because they were SO good -- now aside from the usual teeth marks on the edges of the doors and dishes, my cats have not yet broken in.
I had 3 cats at one time and each cat had to eat in their own room with the door closed -- no big deal because they had all the amenities in whatever room they had been placed. Now I have just two (RIP Princess -- 13 yrs old, taken by Cancer). La Large One will steal whatever food is not secured - so she and Cee Cee have their own separate rooms and their own Cat Mates.
With wet food, the ice packs are good for 14-16 hours maximum, depending on the weather -- even with A/C, in the summer the ice packs will melt faster, so I sometimes freeze the 14-16 hr food in its Cat Mate dish before I pop it into the Cat Mate assembly, even WITH the ice pack in the bottom of the assembly (only in the summer)-- the food WILL defrost before the door opens.
The plastic dishes are top-dishwasher safe (for me anyway). The rest of the unit can be wiped with a wet cloth to clean it.
The battery CAN fall out of its niche -- so I would suggest retaining/securing the battery (AA battery) with a bit of mailing tape (AFTER it has been placed inside the battery holder) to ensure that it stays where it belongs and the kitty won't miss a meal or two. Try not to get too much tape on the black box (right above the battery) that contains all the moving clockwork parts.
Turning the dial CLOCKWISE each time you set it will extend the life of the unit.
Sometimes (rare) the dials will pop out of gear -- I've been able to fix that by opening up the little black box (with the clock and gears) on the back of the unit but it is a tricky/delicate operation. I can take apart cars, so perhaps I have a little more experience in working with gizmos.
DON'T drop this unit and it will reward you with many good years. The hinges (where the top of the door swings up) may wear out before the unit does -- I'm a great fan of Mailing tape-- it makes a great emergency hinge, and seems to last a long time. The cats don't care -- as long as the dish door opens.
IF you are feeding outdoor stray/feral cats (and I hope they are all spayed and neutered), I would suggest leaving the feeders in a protected area and remember that raccoons and other critters will try (perhaps successfully) to break into it and possibly harm the kitties as well. Just a word of caution on my part.
IF your catsitter is being entrusted to feed your cats using the Cat Mate C20 feeders please post the instructions on the wall or fridge where s/he can see them -- both of my cat sitters had never used the Cat Mate C20 feeders before, so the instructions were extremely helpful to them (and my kitties!!)

If you have highly food motivated cats, this item may not be up to the task. These feeders are pretty light weight and easily tossed around. The first time I used two Cat Mates, I came home to find the baseboards dented and one feeder turned upside down. As a result it didn't release the dry food. The next time I used the supplied screw holes in the base to attach them to a 12x24 inch board. This kept them upright, but provided enough stability for Lloyd to use one paw to grip the edge of the lid and pop it open at will. Finally I put straps on the board to hang over the top of a door. Now the Cat Mates hang vertically, and when the spring loaded lids open, disperse dry food across the kitchen floor. It's crude, but tamper proof and spreads the food widely enough so no one can hog it all. I imagine the problem now, with my five cats, when the Cat Mate opens is "If you snooze you lose."

I have 3 dogs ranging in size and age: 8 year old Husky Medium/Large, >1 year old SharLab midsize, and a Rot/Pit/Shepard/Lab 4 years old thats a beast (huge)!
Anyway, these 3 dogs are now on the Merrick Whole Earth foods and loving it! Prior to this food I have tried everything, including prescription food which was dog dependent so it got REALLY exspensive fast. Merrick food is very reasonably priced and the ingridients were well chosen (designed well for overall health).
The husky: Very VERY picky eater. She refuses almost anything you put in front of her, many times she would skip 3 or 4 meals just because it did not appeal to her. She does not eat this food with gusto (as her favorite meal is salmon and cornbread stolen from a plate) but she does eat this food with little hesitation and she seems to be doing well (unfortunately we need to put her on senior diet as shes pudging up a bit)
The SharLab: Shes a new adition so her dietary habbits are that of a puppy, eat everything and anything. However recent vet visits have found her in tip-top health.
The Rot/Pit/Shepard/Lab: This poor dog... lets just say anything that could have gone wrong to him did before he was adopted. He has extreme allergic reactions (hair loss, skin rashes, skin breaks and drying), digestive issues (gas, vomits mostly), behavioral issues linked to inncident before being adopted :[ (anger management, compulsive doggy disorder, extreme doggy depression when his humans arent around) and then some... anyway from this laundry list of defects it seems that his diet controlled many of the "flare ups" that he had. Lets say I've tried him on at least 10 foods, merrick has been the best so far. Since this food his gas has reduced, he no longer is having allergic puff ups or hair loss, he is maintaining a healthy weight, he no longer vomits everywhere, urinary infections have ceased to exist, his energy level has normalized he no longer runs around like he is on caffeine nor does he mope around. He seems to be doing really well with this food.
Food is the owners choice, this one works for all three dogs and has helped my problem dog immensley! If you are going to try it buy the smaller bag first and see how your pooch responds to it (remember to transition slowly to any new food!) I like this food and will stick with it!

We've been feeding this to our 2 year old Golden for about a year now and she's doing very well with it. As a puppy coming from a shelter, she was used to eating junk as in Pedigree Puppy food, and at first was not liking Merrick's main brands. We decided to try Whole Earth.... she loves it and is healthy and full of energy. On top of that, its cheaper than Merrick's other brands.

Switched from Canidae Pure Grain-Free Formula because it caused an allergic reaction to Merrick Whole Earth Formula because it was rated so highly and was affordable for a graduate student. Unfortunately, while the Canidae caused my dog to shed fur everywhere and lose patches of his fur, he immediately disliked Merrick and would refuse to eat it. This is a dog that eats everything that you hand him, so I was initially surprised. Then, I realized after observing him attempt to eat the food for about a week that he was eating it fast and throwing it back up. I understand that dogs that eat fast will sometimes choke but this never occurred before with Canidae. Then, after about a week of eating, choking, throwing it back up, and eating it again (gross, I know) he began to refuse to eat it altogether - missing meal times and sullenly looking at me for half the day until he was starving enough to eat a couple of bites. After thinking about whether it would be spoiling him if I just shucked the entire bag I'd bought and try another brand, he tore me down when I noticed that he was losing weight, after having already experienced rampant allergic weight loss on Canidae. So, I switched to another brand today and observed: he tore into that new brand of dog food like today was his last day on earth.
So, to conclude: Merrick Whole Earth Farms Dry Food is really affordable and offers quality ingredients - although it is not grain-free, the merits of grain-free are still being contested by dog nutritionists and its expensiveness (in my opinion) is the same expense that individuals would pay at the onset of the Atkins fad - which are being given to the consumer at a good, affordable price. It is really unbecoming of the dog food market in general that consumers are forced to pay unholy prices to feed their dogs something that isn't made out of processed chicken by-products so Merrick gets an extra star from me just because there are so few foods out there that challenge its affordability balanced with quality. Unfortunately, no matter how good the price is, if your dog won't eat it, its a waste.

My cats have been on Natural Balance dry and canned food for more than 6 months, and I am not going back to any other brand.
First of all, the can is 6 oz. so it's more food for a reasonable price.
Most importantly, the dry and canned foods are nutritious, all-round, and healthy. Consumer reports (online)researched them and found them to be the best cat food out there. And now, my cats can prove it. They don't eat so much, have maintained their weight, and their coats are so soft and glossy that I can't stop petting them.
Indoor formula and Ultra is their favorite, along with Salmon.

My cats like this food but not anymore that what I was feeding them before. I was feeding them Nutro Natural Choice Indoor formula prior to trying out Natural Balance. Nutro Natural Choice brand is signigicantly cheaper and still has a good ingredient list (no by-products/meal or high grains content). I also didn't notice any difference in terms of my cats litter behavior or coats in switching the foods. Another thing that is minor but that I didn't like is that the cans came all dented. For a balance of cost and ingredients I think I'll be going back to Nutro after this order has been finished...

When you buy Natural Balance (Dick Van Patten's Brand from "Eight is Enough" -- who knew) you will discover that you are paying more than your regular Friskies, 9-Lives or regular store available brands. In fact, sometimes this brand is hard to find ... but it's worth every penny.
Our cats enjoy a mixture of Wellness Healthy Weight Formula Dry Cat Food and Natural Balance wet food. I use the Indoor formula because they are indoor cats. Our cats love this formula and chow it down like happy campers. Their fur is soft as can be, their eyes are bright and they are in great health.
You need to understand that in the world of cat food like so many other things, you really get what you pay for. You will either spend more money on food, or eventually more money on litter materials because feeding a cat regular store bought food with a lot of "corn meal" filler creates the smelliest, and fullest litter box around. Time has taught me this.
Once you begin to understand that all cat foods are not created equal and where there is "corn meal" filler in the ingredient list (cheap for manufacturers and smelly for the household), you will have more cat waste and more litter to have to scoop and buy.
With good foods like Natural Balance (if your cat tolerates it well), you will discover less cat "poop" in the litter box and a LOT less smell around the house. Put good stuff in your cat, get more pleasant outcomes :)
I've lived it and learned it. We are a 5 cat household with ONE litterbox and do amazingly fine. I use Nature's Logic Ponderosa Pine Cat Litter and this keeps odors to an absolute minumum. Some people wonder if we have cats! I change our box twice a week.
Good stuff in, good stuff out = happy cats and happy owners.
